About Omega-3 Fish Oil
It is impossible to overstate the benefits of Omega-3 Fish Oil.  Benefits of fish oil range from lowering cholesterol, to improved brain function, to healthy youthful skin - more about the benefits in a minute.

Fish oil contains (in abundant quantities) two Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids called EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). They are called Essential Fatty Acids because the body is unable to produce them and they must come from the diet. These two Essential Fatty Acids are critical to maintaining good health.

A diet deficient in Omega-3 (DHA's and EPA's in particular) results in cell membrane dysfuntion.  Cell membrane dysfuntion is a critical factor in the development of virtually every chronic disease, especially cancer, diabeties, arthritis, and heart disease.

It is important to maintain an appropriate balance of omega-3 and omega-6 (another essential fatty acid derived from food such as vegetable oils, margarine and dressings) in the diet as these two substances work together to promote health.  An inappropriate balance of these essential fatty acids contributes to the development of disease while a proper balance helps maintain and even improve health. A healthy diet should consist of roughly three times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids. The typical Western diet however tends to contain approximately 20 times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids!

It is generally recommended that you consume approx 300 mg of EPA, and 200 mg of DHA daily (1-2 capsules of Abeeco Fish Oil).  You need to eat about 1kg of tinned fish every day to get the equivalent of this!  But of course, eating this much tinned fish would increase the risk of mercury poisoning.

Many fish oils are contaminated because the fish that are used to produce the fish oils are contaminated.  This is due to the fact that the vast majority of ocean waters in the world suffer varying levels of pollutants.  Therefore it's important to buy a product that sources its fish from the purest waters and that uses the process of molecular distillation, which will remove any existing impurities.

More on the benefits of Omega-3 Fish Oil?
As mentioned, it is impossible to overstate the benefits of Omega-3 Fish Oil.  There is an abundant amount of research on this subject and more information comes to light everyday.  Studies have indicated the following benefits:

Cardiovascular Health
Omega 3 fatty acids have been proven to work wonders for your heart and arteries. They help to lower cholesterol, tryglicerides, LDLs and blood pressure, while at the same time increasing good HDL cholesterol. This can add years to your life expectancy.  They also help protect against heart attacks and strokes.

Reduced Pain and Inflammation
Omega 3 fatty acids, particularly EPA, have a very positive effect on your inflammatory response. By regulating your body's inflammation cycle they help prevent and relieve painful conditions like arthritis, prostatitis and cystitis.

Infant Development - Smarter Babies - Pregnancy
Studies suggest that taking Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly DHA, during the final stages of pregnancy protects the spinal cord, heart and eyes and improves cognitive, and motor development in offspring. Mothers are also said to be less prone to post partum depression or mood change, and to recover from pregnancy more quickly.

Improved Brain Function/Mental ability
Research suggest that Omega-3 fatty acids improve memory, reasoning and focus and helps with learning and concentration problems.  It may also help with the battle against Alzheimer's.

Decreased Depression
Research studies indicate that omega 3 fish oil supplements help to alleviate the symptoms of depression, bipolar and psychosis.

Reduced risk of some Cancers
There is a growing body of evidence that suggests marine Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids reduce the risk of prostate, breast, liver, colon and oesophageal cancers.

Maintain Healthy skin, bones, hair, teeth and eyes
Omega-3 fish oil has a part to play in the maintenance of healthy teeth, bones, hair, eyes, and skin.  Fish oil helps to prevent wrinkles and can delay the aging process of the skin according to research published in the Journal of Lipid Research 2005. Scientists have also found that fish oil containing EPA can limit the damage to the skin produced by overexposure to the sun and help to reduce the negative effect of UV rays.

Omega 3 essential fatty acids are known to play a critical role in promoting healthy skin. They help to regulate cellular function & maintain elasticity & suppleness in the skin. Fish oil is also reported to help reduce the severity of symptoms in Eczema sufferers.

FAQ's
What is the difference between Flaxseed Oil and Fish Oil?
Flaxseed oil is rich in the Omega-3 fatty acid AHA (alpha-linolenic acid) which the body then converts to the Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA - the forms more readily used by the body.  However, this conversion process isn't particularly efficient in some instances and diet can interfer with this process.
Fish oil on the other hand contains only EPA and DHA - i.e. it cuts straight to the chase!
